The cost to run a 12,000 BTU air conditioner 24/7 would typically be between $108 and $216 per month on average. This range accounts for the national average electricity rate as of August 2023, which is $0.15 per kilowatt hour, and an air conditioner running 24 hours a day for 30 days.

A 6,000 BTU mini split system will be able to handle a 12 x 12 room. Once you go over a 260 square foot room, you're going to need to go up to a 9,000 BTU mini split system. A 6,000 BTU mini split can usually handle up to 6,500 BTUs.

10,000 BTUs will cover 300 sq. ft. 12,000 BTUs will cover 400 sq. ft.

If your air conditioner has a bigger BTU rating than the room size needs, it will cycle off too quickly, waste energy, and will not adequately dehumidify the space. So a higher BTU than needed is definitely not recommended.

Most ACs have a 12,000 BTU with a SEER2 rating of 13 and use about 900 watts per hour. You can lower the energy consumption by getting an AC with a higher SEER2 rating.
